Empathy: Feel your feelings

If you are an empath like me, you have probably heard this one before: “You’re too sensitive.” Maybe it was constantly yelled at you because you could not stop feeling your feelings so deeply, whispered amongst friends when your feelings were hurt, or delivered with a smirk as if it were a back-handed compliment. And yes, it stings. However, here is the twist. Being sensitive is not a character flaw. It is actually a superpower and it starts with giving yourself permission to feel your feelings!


Why Feeling Your Feelings Matters


Empaths and Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) are like emotional Wi-Fi routers. We pick up and hold every signal within a five-mile radius. But, our own feelings you ask? Apparently, they are not as loud as everyone's else feelings. Sometimes, it almost feels like scrolling through 37 open browser tabs at once. But, at least with browsers, you can track the open tabs to close them. When feeling a room full of competing energies, you have no idea where you start and other people begin! The temptation is real to “force quit,” shove your feelings down and say you are fine or sprint towards the nearest exit!


However, and here’s the thing: your emotions are not problems that need to be fixed. They are an inner guide house of light from your inner world. In addition, when you let yourself feel, without ignoring your feelings, you are actually mapping your own energy and emotional landscape. Yes, just like a Roomba vacuum. This energy mapping will enable you to read a room faster than a fast food menu. Further, your emotional intelligence will be through the roof!


Feeling Builds Empathy


To that end, here lies the irony. You have to allow let yourself feel, in order to become an emotionally intelligent superhuman. It is like emotional cross-training. When you allow yourself to sit with your own feelings, you can identify someone else’s a mile away and you will know the difference.


By the same token, empathy is not about being drained like a vampire by everyone else’s emotions. When you honor your feelings, you are not carrying the world on your back. In essence, you are simply saying, “Hey, I completely understand. I have been there as well.”  And that is why you are so magical and magnetic!


Handling Life with Awareness


Feeling your feelings, instead of reacting, allows you to be still, observe and decide how to respond. This is YOUR superpower. It is when you get a sense of what you feel inside and choose a response instead of having a immediate “emotional auto-reply.”


It is similar to listening to your own inner soundtrack. You do not have to play every track, you can acknowledge it is playing, choose what you want to listen to, dance if you choose, and turn it off when it’s time. That is true wisdom and awareness.

Feel the awkward, the joyful, the goofy, the uncomfortable, and the sadness, ALL OF THEM. Our sensitivity is not a curse.
